In the centre of Boeotia, at the old national road of Athens- Lamia, there is the small city of Aliartos. As legend has it, the city was built by Aliartos, son of Thetis and Thersander, the king of Thebes, and it has been inhabited since antiquity.
The area is the centre of the production of cotton in the Prefecture. From ancient Aliartos, nowadays, a part of the citadel, several parts of the wall and remains of the theatre have been preserved. Many coins, on which the shield of Boetia is engraved, have been also found. In the area “Kipoi Aliartou” there are industrial buildings of the 19th century, which had been used by the company who had undertaken the draining of Lake Copais. In the centre of Aliartos there are renovated stone-built warehouses of agricultural products. Finally, at a distance of 12 kilometers from Aliartos there is the Monastery of Evangelistria.
In Petra community, there is a wonderful natural waterfall. On the north of Aliartos the fertile valley which resulted from the draining of Lake Copais spreads. In the surrounding areas, the natural beauty is unique.
