The Boeotian capital city is built at an altitude of 160 meters, on the west side of the Prefecture, and it is 130 kilometers away from Athens; it is at the foot of Mount Helicon, while the small River Erkynas flows through it. The presence of nature in the city is very strong.
By taking a walk in the city, you will get to know its four squares: Lampros Katsonis Square, Georgios A’ Square, Athanasios Diakos Square and Panygireos Square. In the center of the city there is the Clock Tower, with the big clock, which was a gift to the residents of the city by Lord Elgin. Over the city, on Prophet Elias Hill the Medieval Castle stands out, in the green landscape. The view of the city from that place is breathtaking!
Erkynas River, which flows through the whole city, springs from the south side of Livadeia, at a point where nature and civilization coexist harmonically in space. In the area of Krya, where the gorge that Erkynas flows through ends, there is a special place. It is a natural park with dense vegetation and small waterfalls, where you will find the municipal refreshment canteen for relaxation moments. It is said that in this area, there was the ancient Oracle of Trophonius. Moreover, in the gorge, there is the Ancient Theater of Livadeia, which has excellent acoustics and hosts most of the events during the Trophonia Festival.
In Livadeia, there is also the Historical & National Museum, which presents important personalities, who lived and were activated in the city. Mostly on the west side of Livadeia, there are traditional stone buildings from the period of the industrial development. Throughout the whole city, at the places through which Erkynas flows, there are small bridges, which complete the picturesque landscape.
Spring is the most ideal season to visit Livadeia. You will enjoy the landscape, which starts to turn green again, and you will have the chance to get to know the local traditions that are still being revived. The Maypole in Livadeia, in the Carnival Period, and Easter events in Livadeia are popular in the whole country and they are annually held.
