HISTORICAL & NATIONAL MUSEUM OF LIVADEIA

The Historical & National Museum of Livadeia was inaugurated in 200 and renovated in 2012, in order to elevate the history of the area, focusing in important people who lived there. Consequently, one of the rooms is in honor of Lampros Katsonis and another one to the historian and writer for Livadeia, Takis Lappas. Moreover, in the museum there are samples of the urban lifestyle and a special division especially for the hydropower, since it is housed in the former flour mill and the “nerotrivi” (traditional water pit for the softening of woolen fabrics) of Magklaras. Recently, the new Virtual Reality room with a digital representation of the Oracle of Trophonius has been created.

Special projections, educational excursions and guided tours to the museum are organized. It is in Krya area, in Livadeia.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF THEBES

The civilization of Boeotia during the Paleolithic period is thoroughly presented through the exhibits of the Archaeological Museum of Thebes. The museum is on the hill of Kadmeia and it includes findings from the excavations in the wider area. It was inaugurated in 1962 and its collections cover the civilization of the period between the Paleolithic and the post byzantine era. The statues of Artemis and Hecate, headstones from the area, and the collection of vessels and bronze objects stand out among the exhibits.

The museum is housed in a ground-floor building with a big yard. The Medieval Tower, part of the frank fortification of Thebes, is very special. It is in the yard of the museum and it is considered to be a part of the castle that was built in 1278.  The museum, apart from the main exhibition, organizes lectures, educational programs and cultural events.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF CHAERONEA

The Archaeological Museum of Chaeronea was established in order to host the findings from Chaeronea, emphasizing on the big importance of the area during the antiquity.  It was founded in 1907 and it was renovated in 2009. The exhibition includes findings of the period from the prehistoric to the early Christian era.

The first room of the Museum has to do with Ancient Chaeronea. The exhibits are weapons, vessels and small objects from the Battle of Chaeronea in 338 BC. The second room has to do with the Prehistoric North Boeotia and presents objects of daily used by the Neolithic person as well as a collection of bronze ware from Orchomenus. The model of a small house of the Neolithic period is also of great importance, since it offers information on the everyday life of that period. The last room of the museum is about the historic period; vessels and objects from the worshipping of gods, coins and sculptures are exhibited there. Finally, the mosaic of the 3rd century BC, with the geometrical decoration and the embodiment of the Seasons, is very interesting as well.

The Archaeological Museum of Chaeronea is on the east entrance of the city. Right next to it, there is the Lion of Chaeronea, the marble monument in honor of the Thebans who were killed in the Battle of 338 B.C.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTION OF DISTOMO


The city of Distomo is built in the area of the ancient city of Phocis, Amvrossos. The archaeological collection of Distomo includes findings from the ancient cities Amvrossos, Medeon, Karakolithos, Antikyra and Voulida. The exhibits cover the period from the Mycenaean to the Palaiochristian period.

In the hallway there are headstones from the Classical and the Hellenistic period that have been found in the area of Distomo. In the first room there are the findings from Distomo and Antikyra. The second room has to do with local ceramic ware and it mostly includes vessels. Through this collection the development of the ceramic art form the Mycenaean up to the Roman period is obvious.  The collection is housed in the preservable building of the old primary school of the city. The museum organizes educational visits for students.

NAZI VICTIMS’ MUSEUM IN DISTOMO

The city of Distomo has been known in history as an agonizing city, because of the massacre by the German army that took place during the period of the Axis occupation of Greece. The history of the city lives in the memory of people through the Nazi victims’ Museum, which was inaugurated in 2005.

In the double-storeyed building of the museum there are the photographs of all the victims as well as of the ossuary that still exists on Kanales hill. There is important material from newspapers and magazines of that period, with articles, photographs and documents. Special oblations about the massacre as well as poems of N. Vrettakos and D. Tsouras, which deal with the local history, are also presented. There is also a projection room with audiovisual material. The Nazi Victims’ Museum is at the entrance of the city, at a very short distance from the Town Hall.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF SCHIMATARI

On the east end of Boeotia Prefecture, in Schimatari, there is the oldest museum of Boeotia, built in 1890 and renovated in 2006. The museum was established in order to house the findings of the excavations in ancient Tanagra. Through the exhibits the development of the art of Tanagra in the course of time is depicted.

The museum includes special rooms about the prehistoric, the archaic, the classical, the Hellenistic and the Roman era. The exhibits include funerary monuments, marble engraved columns and sculptures. There are also vessels, jewelry, statuettes and small objects. The findings from Roman tombs of the area are also very important. In the yard, there are headstones and parts of buildings and sanctuaries, as well as two Christian tablets. The museum includes “living” data for the rich local history and recent research keeps adding new information on the historic topography of the area.
